The Buena Vista VFC is proud to announce that we have been recognized as a participating fire department from the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner. This recognizes all of the training our members have done to become certified at the Firefighter 1 level or higher. Currently 25% of our firefighters are certified as FF1 or higher.
Recently the Buena Vista VFC received our order of 2 new FLIR K65 thermal imagining cameras and truck chargers. These cameras were purchased using grant money from the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner. They will enable our members to search for people in structure fires and wilderness settings, as well as monitor fire conditions while performing fire suppression.
Congratulations to 145 Firefighter Sarah Davenport on passing her National Registry EMT exam!
Our new turnout gear washer/extractor and gear dryer were both delivered and installed in Station 145! The washer extractor can be used to remove harmful carcinogens after fighting fires, as well as removing infectious substances from gear/uniforms. They were purchased with assistance from the Office of the State Fire Commissioner's Firefighter grant.
For company training this evening we welcomed members from STAT Medevac for a class on landing zone safety. We covered how to safely establish a landing zone, making contact with the helicopter, and how to safely operate around a helicopter on the ground. Thank you to Joe Caldwell for taking time to come talk with us!
For company training this evening we welcomed members from the Allegheny County HAZMAT Red team, Station 440, which can be requested to assist us with hazardous materials calls in our jurisdiction. Topics covered during the training were how to request aid, what the capabilities of the red team are, and what equipment they have. Thank you to Rick from 440 for bringing the truck out to us!
Members from Station 145 took the Engine to the Elizabeth boat launch, where we practiced pump operations with other area fire departments. We got to familiarize ourselves with aerial master streams, drafting, and hoseline advancement. Departments in attendance were Elizabeth VFC (139), Blaine Hill VFC (142), Floreffe VFC (178), Gill Hall VFC (179), Jefferson 885 VFC (180), Lincoln Boro VFRC (184), Versailles VFC (286), and Elrama VFC (Washington 24).
Station 145 recently took delivery of a Plymovent diesel exhaust system for the fire garage. Whenever any of our apparatus are turned on, the system automatically kicks in and removes harmful diesel exhaust from the garage, allowing firefighters to breathe clean air and reduce the risk of cancer from the harmful exhaust fumes. Funding for the project was supplemented by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner grant program.
Members from Buena Vista VFC concluded an Engine Company Operations class held at the Westmoreland County Community College Public Safety Training Center, where we practiced fire attack and hoseline advancement techniques. It's always good to get back to basics to keep our skills fresh and even learn something new. Special thanks to our instructors Chad and Stan!
Congratulations to FF Ben Desmond and Lt Chris Gioia on passing their Basic Vehicle Rescue Technician exam! They both attended the BVR class hosted by Central VFC, where they were able to learn basic vehicle rescue practices and also familiarize themselves with Rescue 147's capabilities and equipment.
On Saurday October 21st, members of Station 145 (Buena Vista) and Station 147 (Central) held a joint drill to hold a meet and greet, become familiar with each others equipment, and assess our combined fire and rescue capabilities. Stations 145 and 147 have worked together on many emergency calls in Elizabeth Township. Because of our close proximity to each other, we are bettering our working relationship with them and focusing on improved teamwork and collaboration.
